Breastfeeding is one of the most natural acts in the world, but it still takes some practice and getting used to. One of the learning experiences for mums and babies is discovering the best breastfeeding positions that work for them both.
A lot of new mums are interested in doing everything they can to enhance their breastfeeding experience and make sure they’re doing everything “correctly” in order to avoid any major problems.
They are often met with confusing advice, and find themselves hearing a lot of well-intentioned but incorrect breastfeeding myths from friends and family. That’s why it’s so important for new mums to talk with their healthcare professionals (midwives, maternal child health nurses, GP’s, lactation consultants) about their concerns and questions.
One of the most important benefits of breastmilk is that it helps protect your baby from illness, while boosting their immune system. As most mums know, infants are especially vulnerable to disease, because their bodies’ natural defence systems have not fully developed. So, you might say that a baby’s first “line of defence” against germs and illness is breast milk.
So, you’ve decided to start using a breast pump. You’ve read the instructions and you’ve grabbed a glass of water to sit down and start expressing and then you remember hearing you friends talking about something to do with sizing your nipples! Was that right?

We recently invited art and design students from around Melbourne to design a poster to celebrate and highlight Breastfeeding and Human Milk. We wanted to reach out to young up and coming designers to think differently to the “posters of old,” which we often see in the hospitals promoting breastfeeding. We asked the students to bring new light to this topic and ignite passion for a new way of thinking in health promotion.
